Artist Statement:
As an artist, I find myself constantly rationalizing my presence in this part of the world, at this time, in this century, both physically and spiritually.
I have always been deeply engaged in art and my sensibility has been shaped by my experiences as a woman in a traditional society. My work draws on Sufism seeking to contemporise the mystical, through form and function. In my endeavor to forge a relationship between my new cultural environment and my past, I look for ways to interweave self, nature and culture in a harmonious way.
My work is autobiographical to some extent, a visual language engaging in a search for self, drawing on cultural traditions perceived to be forbidden.
In essence, I strive to make paintings that are as inscrutably private as they are publicly accessible, negotiating between that which is hidden and that which is revealed.
